5 ways to look unbearably cool in a blazer
By Annabel van Eijk | Ads Disclosure | 2/20/20, 2:27 PMA layering gift to us all, a power move, a simple way to take on the world; of course, I’m talking about the blazer. What once just belonged to a suit came into its own and has proved quite the lifesaver in our morning getting-dressed despair.
If you’re wondering how to wear a blazer, the answer is really, how not?! You can easily see it as any other layering essential like a cardigan or denim jacket, you’d wear those with anything as well right? Yet instead of a cardigan, the blazer actually adds something to your look, it adds a whole lot of sophisticated style. Let me show you a few outfits, from the easy and popular blazer and jeans outfit to mixing and matching and giving mixed style signals (sounds more difficult than it is, I promise).

How to wear a blazer?
A full-on “I’m the boss around here” look
You don’t actually need to be a boss to look like a boss. Actually, you don’t even need to have a job, you just need a few really good style choices. A blazer in itself is already a stylishly polished item but worn with a pair of tailored, chic pants it really gets to live up to its full potential as a retro power move for women. All you really need to do is to find a pair of matching trousers that are tailored, sharp and well-made. They don’t have to be the same color or be super matchy with the blazer, you could do an offwhite trouser with a Navy blazer or a gray blazer with black trousers, or you know, just get a suit…I’d advise to go for a double-breasted blazer because this gives to most “I got this” energy.
A classic Blazer and Jeans Outfit
This has pretty much become a uniform for the fashion crowd and celebrity off-duty style. A strong, oversized blazer paired with skinny jeans is just so easy and trendy, there’s no reason to not repeat it over and over again. The blazer and jeans outfit is kind of like you just woke up and threw on a blazer to look representable, but all that in a really good, stylish way. Pick a pair of skinny jeans that are ripped at the hem or have a worn-in look and cool t-shirt you may or may not have stolen from the guy you were with the night before…
A look that is basically an instant mood uplifter
A walking rainbow, but make it stylish. A blazer doesn't have to be all serious, we’ve spotted plenty of blazers in chic pastel shades of blue, purple and pink, bright-colored blazers and blazers in cool funky patterns. Besides getting yourself a new “fun” blazer you can also utilize what you already have or get yourself a blazer you think you could wear more often. A subtle checkered blazer can still be considered more of an essential and can be clashed with other prints like a bright floral dress or polka dot blouse. If you’ve found yourself a colorful blazer, get ready to clash colors and patterns and just remember to have fun with it!
A look you’ll want to repeat over and over again
Wear this outfit and you’ve officially mastered the art of casual-cool layering. Another favorite amongst celebs when they’re walking their dog or heading out for coffee (do I enjoy paparazzi photos too much?), this is a chic yet chill outfit for days you can be a little bit more relaxed in how you dress. You could take the whole athleisure meets working girl even a step further and complete the look with a pair of leggings or when it’s warmer cycling shorts. Go for a blazer that’s extra oversized and wear a cap with it and you might just be mistaken for Hailey Bieber…
A girly-girl goes rogue
Often, the best outfits are mixing up different styles and this one is a personal favorite of mine. A dress is just a dress most of the time, but worn with a cool, oversized blazer or a cropped blazer it’s a look. This outfit is subtly adventurous yet super easy to put together and you’ll look like you belong at Copenhagen fashion week. The key here is to take something that’s on the extreme side of girliness like a flowy floral midi dress or more on the extreme side of sexy like a silk midi skirt or slip dress and throw over a big blazer like you’re just too cool to stick to one style. For shoes, you can do anything from knee-high boots, sandals or sneakers depending on where you’re going or what style you’re after.
Hopefully, I've sold you on the versatile magic of a blazer; I truly can't stress enough how easy it is to elevate your outfit with a blazer! When in doubt, a blazer and jeans outfit always works and if you're asking yourself how to wear a blazer again - just throw it over whatever you had planned to wear and you'll see it most probably works!
