By the 2nd of January, I’m sure you’ve heard every possible combination of ‘new year, new me’ so I won’t bore you with any corny puns – but if you are looking for some new looks for the new year (ok, so just the one), here is a round up of the biggest headline trends which are going to be popular throughout 2019.
The 2019 Fashion Trends
The Utility Trend
The utility trend consists of functional fashion pieces which previously, despite the clean cuts, lacked a certain femininity which some of you might be looking for. This year, the utility trend has been refreshed with some lighter colors and lighter materials – perfect for the transition to Spring.
This trend is probably the natural progression for those of you who favored athleisurewear in 2018 as the likes of OFF-WHITE have also moved into utility fashion, kicking off a trend with a practical-pocketed belt bag.
- Boiler suits
- Utility bags
- Statement pockets
- Boxy shorts
- Combat detailing
- Colors: all the neutrals focusing on brown, off-green, white and cream.
- Material: leather, linen.
- My must-have piece: Carhartt Jacket
If you’re looking for the boxy shapes but with a little extra pizazz, it’s time to look past the 2019 fashion trends and discover the future of fashion. Although at first glance, this trend might seem a bit extreme to wear on a daily basis you can definitely incorporate elements into your looks.
- Statement Jackets
- Deconstructed Clothes
- Snake Print
- Geometric Patterns
- Metallic Shoes
- Colors: metallics.
- Material: plastics, vinyl, sequins, glossy fabrics.
- My must-have piece: transparent outerwear.
In stark contrast to the utility trend, an essence of romanticism has emerged into 2019 fashion trends. When I say romanticism, I’m sort of bringing together a number of different trends which have been bubbling under the surface. As Saville Row materials bud back into fashion, decorative scarf prints and heritage brands continue to grow in popularity, the result is floaty, delicate fashion.
- Tight pleats
- Couture frills
- Flowing gowns
- Floating sleeves
- Lace details
- Colors: cream, white, coral, pastels.
- Materials: satin, tweed, feathers.
- My must-have piece: Self-Portrait dress.
The 1980’s lives on
It was big in 2018 and it will be bigger this year. You can expect a more exaggerated version of the 80’s in 2019 as accessories are super-sized, fluorescents have been modernized, and summer swimsuits are going to be totally bitchin’.
New for 2019
- Oversized bows
- Neon overloads
- Super-sized jewelry
- More power silhouettes
- Covered (cold-) shoulders
- Sexy suits
- Long skirts x boots
- Colors: neons, white.
- Materials: tulle, vinyl, acid-wash denim.
- My must-have piece: vintage Reebok sneakers.
1970’s: Boho-chic meets the modern day.
This might be the easiest of the 2019 fashion trends to embrace on a daily basis; the flared jeans, billowing sleeves and cord-everything are trendy and require very little effort to make you a cool dude. The new year is a time for self-reflection, so find yourself, and then find yourself some more 70’s inspired fashion.
- Floral pants
- Suede skirts
- Loose fitting silhouettes
- Colors: earthy neutrals, burnt orange, brown, forest green.
- Materials: corduroy, leather, suede.
- My must-have piece: corduroy pants.
